Family favorites are…family favorites! Each and every family favorite has its own unique way of being made that shifts from house to house, carrying forward long traditions developed in grandma’s kitchen over years and years. Personally, my favorite way to cook is to take these traditional family favorites, update them, replace store-bought mixes and canned ingredients with raw ones, and make it overall more healthy and fresh. After all, an updated family favorite might just be the best family favorite of all!
Meatloaf is the perfect target for updating a family favorite meal. When cooked at home, meatloaf ranges from purely delectable to dry and bad. The history of meatloaf goes as far back as Roman times showing up in the Apicius, a 5th century record of food and cooking methods. The American version descends from a ground pork + cornmeal dish called “scrapple” made by Dutch and German Americans in Pennsylvania. This dish slowly crossed the plains over generations of migration to find itself in the valleys of the Rocky Mountains where my mother would make an all-beef version with a sweetened ketchup as the sauce.
This week we serve you an updated meatloaf made entirely from scratch, and topped with a homemade sweet bbq sauce and some purely comforting sides. The favorites are favorites for a reason, and all of us at Curious Table hope this is just as satisfying as what you enjoyed at home!
